It won't follow your mouse, it stays exactly the same distance away from your ship no matter what. The modded crosshair is 'locked' in place. It feels so much better! It's a temp solution though so it's not perfect.

If you could include something like this in a future update, it would be a huge quality of life improvement.ĮDIT: Thanks to a suggestion from the discord, I figured out how to mod the reticle to be closer to the Limited option I described above Big cannons could have their own indicator that could move further away from the ship (closer to the "unlimited" option) compared to fast-firing chain guns whose indicator would be more limited and tied closer to the ship, kind of like how bombs have a different aiming indicator from guns currently. There are other options besides these two, even different reticles depending on which weapons are equipped. It would also take care of the problem of the current tiny arrow indicator being hidden behind explosions because it would be nowhere near your ship. This would enable you to make long-distance precision shots, while still requiring skill by making the player account for the shot's gravity arc and the enemy ship's movement.

It's pretty much the same as the Limited option in that it follows your mouse, except that you can move it anywhere on the screen, as far away from your ship as you want. The other option I'd suggest is an "Unlimited" reticle. However, because it's limited, it wouldn't be that different from what we have now. This would put it outside most of the explosion graphics and make it more noticeable to prevent it getting lost, as well as making it possible to be a bit more precise with your shots. It can move anywhere within that circular dotted line (added for demo purposes, would not actually be there in-game) showing which direction you are aiming.

The concept is that it adds a larger crosshair a bit away from your ship that follows your mouse, but it has a limit on how far away from your ship it can get. You can already be outnumbered 3-to-1 in a battle, you don't need to handicap yourself by not being able to aim correctly on top of that. You kind of just have to point it in the general direction of the enemy and hope because it's not very precise. That can snowball really quickly because your damaged ships will either need enough time to repair safely without being caught, or you'll be taking a wounded fleet into battle in your next encounter, only to get shot up even more.įurthermore, the indicator is so small that it is tricky to line up shots, especially shooting long-range. Being helpless like that is frustrating, especially when the enemies are continuing to shoot you, making it take longer until you can effectively respond and knock them out. That can go on for a very long chunk of time so you don't know where you're shooting until everything settles. There are just too many explosions on and around your ship, so the indicator gets lost under all that and the chaos of the screen shaking around.

The current aiming indicator/reticle is pretty small.Īnd while it kind of works, this happens a lot. Demo at the bottom, instructions in the comments. Mine ended up looking likeĮDIT: Temp solution found and modded into the game.

It should be half the width of your total sprite, and 44px shorter than your full image to be placed properly. You need to edit "hotspot =" next, which is where the game uses as the center of the arrow. The second two sets of numbers are the width and height of the indicator. Next, open HighFleet/Media/Tex/Midground2.res in notepad and scroll to "Animation sign_arrow" edit the first two numbers of "rect =" to be the top left corner of your new indicator. I found that a longer indicator ended up feeling clumsy. You can also just draw a long line out of the vanilla one, or create whatever kind of crosshair you want. I copied that and used the empty space at ~3100px to create a new sprite by combining it with a vanilla crosshair found at ~3700px. The vanilla aiming icon is the third one down on the far right side, at 660px. How do you do the mod I mentioned to get the bigger cursor? It's pretty easy.įirst, open HighFleet/Media/Tex/Midground2.png in GIMP, photoshop, or another editor.
